old covington fire station
feasibility study | Covington, LA
WDG helped the City of Covington determine whether or not this historic structure was worth saving and whether or not it would benefit the community. WDG inspected the site, conducted research, created a site plan to include parking, public access and landscaping with consideration for under utilized adjacent lots. The project involved the community, site planning, artistic design influence and had historic considerations.
The design team proposes two options for the fire station; both options include repurposing the two story structure into one open space. Option one entails the interior renovation of the existing fire station converting it into a singe story open space. In option two a mezzanine gallery is added in addition to an elevator tower and catwalk connecting to the existing building. Both concepts include restrooms as well as counter tops and bar seating area for food/beverage service.
At the exterior of the building, WDG proposed adding glazed overhead doors. The resulting transparency would establish a greater connection to the surrounding outdoor spaces. The building interior will have exposed roof framing, which highlights the historical structural components. The intent is to salvage existing materials and repurpose them into the design of the new building.
