WDG has performed extensive planning, architecture and engineering services for the City of New Orleans over the past years ranging from damage assessments, building relocation assessments, feasibility studies, renovations and improvements.
The City of New Orleans’ center of government, City Hall, was heavily damaged due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. WDG was selected to assess damages and provide a Comprehensive Damage Report of City Hall for the City of New Orleans and FEMA.
As a result, WDG’s expanded scope of work included repairs to major portions of City Hall with the goal of restoring this facility to its pre-storm condition and providing the necessary upgrades requested by the City of New Orleans. Included were roof replacements, curtain wall repairs, interior floor, wall and ceiling repairs and replacement of mechanical and electrical systems. WDG worked with the City of New Orleans and FEMA to acquire additional funding for the repairs and replacements to City Hall.
WDG was also commissioned to do other various projects which include: redesign of the Capital Projects Administration Office; renovations in the City Council Chambers; site and landscaping improvements; roof replacement; EOC and other mechanical and electrical work throughout the building.
In 2009, WDG was selected to provide a feasibility study for the relocation of City Hall services. The investigation of the existing Chevron Building and adjacent properties located at 935 Gravier Street, 919 Gravier Street and 218 O’Keefe Ave, was to include an in-depth analysis by all disciplines to formulate a thorough understanding of current conditions and future needs by the City of New Orleans.

- City Hall Facility Relocation Assessment - Feasibility Study (New Orleans, LA) –WDG provided a comprehensive plan for phasing, planning, architectural and engineering services to assess the Chevron building at 935 Gravier Street and adjacent buildings at 919 Gravier and 218 O’Keefe as a possible relocation site for City Hall.
- Existing City Hall Building Restoration Report (New Orleans, LA) – WDG was selected to compile a comprehensive damage report post- Katrina, identifying items for repair and upgrade, as well as items FEMA missed in their evaluations, that were considered a direct cause of the storm. This assessment identified specific mitigation items, items that were to be upgraded to meet current code standards and improvements that could be a part of the rebuild process, that were not storm related. Areas included roof diagnostics, water and humidity infiltration, mechanical and electrical emergency systems and exterior envelope.
- Emergency Operations Center Build-out in City Hall (New Orleans, LA) WDG was selected to renovate the west wing of the Ninth Floor of City Hall for the Emergency Operations Center. This 9,500 square foot facility is occupied by the Homeland Security Office and will be used as the central location for all communication for the City of New Orleans in the event of a disaster. This project included the installation of a new Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), reorganization of the existing generator system with a new transfer system, upgrading the existing electrical system to meet the new audio/ visual standards, and a new emergency back-up HVAC system. Phasing of construction was an important factor that was considered as part of the scope of work.
- City Hall Emergency Generators (New Orleans, LA) – WDG was selected by the Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness to prepare construction documents for the replacement of Emergency Generators on City Hall and firehouses throughout the City for the use of future storms or outages. WDG was selected due to the success with working with the Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness on the Emergency Operations Center. These generators were purchased and distributed from a grant that was obtained from the Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness.
- City of New Orleans Capital Projects (New Orleans, LA) – Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, WDG was selected to reprogram Capital Projects. The area was to receive a complete renovation which was to include demountable partition systems(DIRTT) and interior finishes.
- City of New Orleans Notarial Archives - WDG provided architectural and engineering services to design the City Archives Facility located in the 2400 block of Poydras Street, New Orleans. The new facility, which was never constructed, was to provide a protective housing for the Notarial Archives, Recorder of Mortgages and the Recorder of Conveyances, EOC and MIS Center for the City of New Orleans. Security and climate control requirements were an essential consideration on the layout, design and structural integrity of this facility.
- City of New Orleans City Hall -Roof Package (New Orleans, LA) - WDG provided post-Katrina facility assessments of the roof and all electrical services. Scope also included a re-design for the roof.
- City Hall-Cooling Tower Repair and Fluid Cooler Replacement (New Orleans, LA) – WDG provided engineering services that included mechanical and electrical maintenance on five cooling towers.
- City Hall-Condenser Pump/Piping Repairs (New Orleans, LA) WDG provided engineering services that included mechanical and electrical replacement of the condenser pumps.
